More about edublogs

Did I mention that it is free?

www.edublogs.org

Pros
Huge amount of memory
Posts are only show when accepted by the account holder (you can keep it clean and focused)
Many bells and whistles not available on Blogger
Supported by CDE
Accessed by teachers and students
You can post podcasts and videos
Easy to use and make

I also just learned about Audacity (a free download) that is used to make audio podcasts. It's being used widely in the Elk Grove district and appears to be a great motivator for kids writing.

ed1stop and related resources

Tiffany asked how different folks used some of the resources that can be found in ed1stop. Some of the sites - like Edutopia - are also listed on our FSUSD Ed Tech page under Quick Resources (right hand side): http://ww4.fsusd.k12.ca.us/technology/

Edutopia http://www.edutopia.org/ is a site that continually keeps me updated on project based learning, virtual field trips as well as general technology integration tips. It is smartly written and always full of new and valuable ideas.

Back to ed1stop:
Many math teachers have given very favorable feedback on the Middle School Math Project (Curriculum tab, left hand side): http://www.ctap4.org/math/
For those in middle or high school, the Math Quiz is quite engaging - but it might make you feel insecure about how much you know. Choose your competitor wisely! Also check out Digital Math and Digital English while at ed1stop.

Anyone who teaches California history needs to use Calisphere (listed on Project Help): http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/ It has a wonderful array of primary sources.
Trying to learn about reading and writing at the elementary level?

Check out Between the Lions, based on the PBS series: http://pbskids.org/lions/
Of course, any primary teacher should make sure their students know about Starfall: http://www.starfall.com/

BLOGs for students

I typed in "BLOG for classrooms" and found many choices. Some had a small annual charge. Would it be too difficult for the district to host classroom blogs for parents and a blog for students in specific classrooms?

Welcome to the TLC Blog

Hello all! I am enjoying learning and playing with blogging - I hope you will too! If you want to access the website directly, the URL is: http://tlcfsusd.blogspot.com

I am sure that this blog will evolve over time, but I hope that you will contribute words of wisdom, help with questions that we have, offer advice or express concerns. I look forward to reading the posts, and will do my best to keep up with managing the site.

Kathy

An Ed Tech Vision

The world spins quickly. Yesterday, we asked Kathy to create a blog, and today it's posted. Several folks have already joined. Our identity is made real by the act of our participation.

I made a comment at our meeting that in the future, hardware will be inconsequential. It will be software and subscriptions that dominate how we communicate. Everyone will have access to a computer or phone. The question will be, what kinds of "rights" will you have? Will you be able to afford services? (It's much like the difference between owning a TV versus being able to afford premium cable channels.) Who will share your "e-space?" If everyone babbles away 24X7, will anyone have time to listen?

The world is changing so rapidly that it is easy to forget that the younger children whom we teach no longer may share our history and background. It is up to us to provide a framework for continuity, to help them shape values for a new age, and to give them the skills they need to make their way in the world..
